Overview[]
At one point corruption entered into the programming of some of the nanocytes on Earth, creating a disease that caused extreme, mindless hunger in anyone infected. The affliction was not airborne, but had a near 100% infection rate among those exposed. The infected were only interested in attacking those not already mad, and worked in parallell, but without cooperation, creating huge mobs. The zombie hordes, or "Mad" as they became called spread their infection around the world, tearing down all the civilization humanity had managed to rebuild after World's Worst Day Ever, in only a few years.
This also caused nature and all surviving humanity to be saturated with nanocytes, laying the groundwork for the Age of Magic. As the affliction spread, Lilith waited for signs of a single human with immunity to the condition, and eventually, after about 70 years, Ezekiel was found, and his immunity code was transmitted via satellites to all the world, halting the condition and saving the remains of humanity, many of whom had extremely rapidly evolved into a large number of specially adapted subspecies depending on their environments.
Miscellaneous
- The Mad are described as zombie like but also have skin blistered and dotted with weeping sores, and his hair was falling out in clumps.[1]
- The Mad who were too far gone to revert to humanity became Remnant, a goblin-like race with limited ability for civilization.
- Vampires were extremely susceptible to the Madness, often succumbing within hours at most.
- Weres lost the ability to shift properly even without being infected, and most eventually ended up in a hybrid form, with limited, beastlike intelligence.
- The Mad could be killed by removing their head or a silver weapon to the heart.[2]
