Overview[]
Michael is the Patriarch of the Family and the first Vampire and therefore Founder of all the Vampires except Bethany Anne. He is over a thousand years old and he and his family are helping the US-government to deal with the UnkownWorld. He set the strictures in place for the whole UnknownWorld. The vampires he created are called his sons or daughters. Michael had only turned six in his life to date, and none since he had come to America.[1]
History[]
Michael was the first human that TOM altered his DNA on, when Michael stumbled through the caves and investigated TOM's crashed space ship about 30-40 years after the ship had crashed. At the time, TOM needed to make some adjustments but Michael left before TOM could figure out what needed to be done. The transformation for Michael caused unending pain that he barely survived. As a result of the flawed changes, when he changed someone, they too suffered from pain. Because Michael never received any information from TOM he ended up by figuring everything out himself, some of it was more work arounds than what actually was needed. Michael was an honorable man and valued honor above all else. Because of his honor and beliefs, he put in place strict rules for all of those in the Unknown World to follow and he did not tolerate disobedience.
Michael had migrated to American colonies before the American Revolution, He had supported the revolution and Frank Kurns believed there was a high probability the Revolution would have failed without Michael's intervention based on archives Frank had access to.[2] Michael's family in France created letters of introduction for Ben Franklin as well as providing significant funding.
Michael's rules (pre-Bethany Anne taking over leadership)[]
- Dishonorable beings are to be put to death. Michael believed in the biblical philosophy of cut down the tree, burn the roots, and salt the ground so nothing would ever grow there again. [3]
- Nosferatu will be put to death.
- The rest of the world must not find out about the Unknown World.
- Only people with less than 6 months to live should attempt being turned.
- All Wechselbalg will belong to a pack structure, and each pack will answer to a council for their nation or area in the world.[4]
Activities[]
The Kurtherian Gambit[]
Death Becomes Her[]
After the death of his vampire grandson, Carl wakes Michael halfway into Michael's expected decade long hibernation. Michael calls in a "Debt of Honor" to the US government. The Debt meant they were expected to send 3 candidates that;
- Trained and top 25 percent in martial skills
- Very bright
- Live with purpose
- Be very honorable
- Be very religious
- Have 6 months or less to live
Frank Kurns is the military liaison to the Unknown World. He was alive the last time the debt of honor was called. The military leadership had not taken Michael seriously and over 250 lost their lives before they realized their error.
What Michael got was Bethany Anne. At first Michael wasn't happy with a female, mostly because females rarely survived the transition. But then he decided that perhaps what the Unknown World needed was a Mother. Once she accepted he misted himself and her and took Bethany Anne to the Romanian mountains, to the original device that had transformed him over a thousand years before.
Michael had realized many centuries before that he was not malleable regarding his honor. In the last couple of centuries, it had caused more and more problems since he had killed those who had thought his honor was something to be negotiated. That it was his problem he would not bend or recognize gray areas.[5] Michael knew he needed a successor who could be honorable but more flexible and in tune with the changed world.
By the end of the book both Carl and Michael have disappeared and searches for them have been fruitless.
Never Forsaken[]
David has trapped Michael in a glass cube where Michael is only surviving by Mysting. David hates his Vampire father Michael because Michael cares about humanity whereas David considers humans no better than cattle to be harvested. David is the apex predator of the Forsaken. Bethanny Anne with Stephen and Asur attack David's fortress in rural Germany. Bethany Anne has to draw Michael out through the Etheric so he can take solid form. Michael is so close to death they transport away before hunting down David.
Michael warns Bethany Anne that when she takes out Anton there will be a power vacuum that other Forsaken will try to fill using Nosferatu as their soldiers. Humans will be the collateral damage in these fights. The only solution is to have another very powerful vampire take control of Anton's Central and South American territories. Bethany Anne's solution is Michael to be that vampire since his lack of attention allowed the David and Anton problem to fester.
Under My Heel[]
Stephan had disowned Michel centuries ago after he had changed Stephen. Stephen didn’t want this life. He had been happy before and never treated him as anything more than the Patriarch since then until now. They reconciled and considered each other brothers again. [6]
Michael resides in the Anton's primary home in Argentina. He is working through Anton's notes and documents to figure out how many issues he has to deal with. He finds sketchy notes there is a mole in the North American Were Council.
Tabitha and Michael meet Giannini and censor her for leaving her research notes in an insecure location on the web. Tabitha gives her a location to store her notes that is much safer and Giannini keeps asking to interview Bethany Anne. Giannini seems unaware of who Michael is. After Giannini leaves, Michael explains the danger the reporter is in my collecting that information. Bethany's enemies are more than willing to torture and kill for information.
Kneel or Die[]
Bethany Anne and Michael go on a date, to David's Castle in Germany. David is hosting a dinner for what remains of his cadre after Bethany Anne and Stephen's reign of revenge on his minions. Bethany Anne starts the attack and kills most of the cadre until David shoots her with a large bore gun. But before David can finish Bethany Anne off Michael tears out David heart and Ashur kills the last of the cadre.
We Will Build[]
Bethany Anne is frustrated with Michael. In her mind she had laid out a perfect plan to lure Michael into a romantic relationship. All the steps had worked out up to the point he didn't jump. Finally she took the initiative and essentially jumped him.
It's Hell to Choose[]
Bethany Anne needs to be in two places at once as two sets of children are in danger. She takes the group with her Elite that are in Chechnya, where terrorists are planning on taking the children hostage and more than likely kill them all. But at the same time, the children from the TQB Base in Co. are kidnapped as thy travel to Denver on a Field Trip. She calls Michael to take the lead in rescuing them.[7]
While checking out the surveillance tapes, Michael sees someone he knows, Boris and realizes that Boris can be his back up while the rest remain at the base to protect it from the main attack that they know is coming. After successfully rescuing the children, Boris tells Michael that the attackers are to deliver a package to the base, a package he suspects is to blow it up. Michael races off in his Mist form to find it, when he does, he realizes that it is a small nuke. Michael contacts Lance and Lance directs him to take it to a small protected valley, unbeknownst to them, it is where the attackers command is set up, so when they see the package is moving rapidly towards them, they denotate it. It is denotated just as Michael releases it and turns to Mist. He is caught in the back blow of it and every assumes that he is dead.
It will take 150 years, but he does return in The Second Dark Ages
