Biography[]
About Author[]
In late 2015 Michael Anderle burst on the Indy author scene with his first book "Death Becomes Her". What initially started out as a Fantasy with werewolves and vampires expanded to encompass Science Fiction with aliens working behind the scenes on earth then other aliens trying to conquer earth.
Being an avid reader he knew what other avid readers wanted, that was new books in a series quickly and he delivered with the first 3 books released within days of each other and than a new book about once a month. His first few books were a bit rocky in the editing department but when he discovered how quickly readers became fans of his series he put together a team of an editor, beta readers and cover artists and his releases became top notch.
Michael Anderle (1967-Hopefully a long time from NOW) was born in Houston, Tx. A very curious child, he got into trouble - a lot. What to do with an inquisitive mind when he was grounded? Read! That hasn't changed since he was in elementary school. The Kindle was developed with him in mind. In the first 20 years, he mostly read Science Fiction and Fantasy. In the last 10 years he has enjoyed Urban Fantasy and Military Fiction. Using these influences, he has developed The Kurtherian Gambit. A series dedicated to watching how one genetically modified person with an incredible team behind her might be able to change the future, if she can survive along the way.[2]
From author notes at the end of Yield to None[]
Are there any foods that you hate?
I could write a short novel listing all the foods I hate and why. I won’t bore you. I will admit that, for the most part, I do not like fruits or vegetables. I’ll stomach a banana under the right conditions, refried beans (pretty yum, actually), tomatoes as long as they are either ketchup or spaghetti sauce, and a shit-ton of rice and potatoes, which others tell me are starches or tubers. I tell them if they aren’t meat or fruit and they grow? They are vegetables. That’s an easy enough system for me. Early in my life, my parents divorced. Around kindergarten, my older brother Darryl and I went to live with my father. That was because the man my mom decided to marry didn’t want more kids. Unfortunately for me, my father and my new stepmother had a “try a little of everything” rule at the table each night. They made me try tomatoes… Raw. I chewed, swallowed, and immediately yakked the bite back up. Forcing me to eat tomatoes was now off the list. If I had been smart, I would have done that a lot more often with other vegetables. Hell, I was a skinny kid anyway, so it wasn’t as if I were going to look any more anemic than I already was. Damn, missed opportunities! As I’ve gotten older, I have stayed true to not eating anything I don’t want to. It’s not made my wife happy, but I point out that she doesn’t lose me to football (or any sport) season, and I cook a lot. And I clean. That usually gets me out of anything challenging. From time to time, she goes away mumbling about having me try this or that. However, I held true through the gauntlet of my dad’s table and came out the other side. Now my legs are under MY table. And my rules state I don’t have to eat anything I don’t want to. For all of you reading this who are thinking, “Wow, I didn’t eat vegetables as a kid, but I grew up and started chowing down,” I’d like to think the difference is that I’m not a quitter. (Editor’s note: that “hated them in childhood but now love them” thing is me and lobster and fresh fish. Hated them then but devour it now. Too bad, since my family fished and we always had fresh fish. Like, still gasping just before we ate-fresh. Gee, am I a quitter?) I still hate them.[3]
Michael's Thought on creating a character (from his newsletter July 6th, 2023)[]
Today, I thought I'd let you in on a how I come up with my characters. I get asked about it, and I'm happy to share my method with you. It's a mix of different traits and quirks that I hope make my characters come alive in the stories.
Usually, 2 serious, 1 non-serious.
When I start creating a character, I usually begin with things I like in people.
Take Bethany Anne from The Kurtherian Gambit, for example. I love her sense of right and wrong and how she never leaves a friend behind. These are two (2) things that mean a lot to me, and they're a big part of who she is.
But I also like to throw in something a bit different, something that might not be so serious, but makes the character feel real.
For Bethany Anne, it's her love for Coke and not-so-much love for Pepsi. It's a small thing, but it makes her feel more like a real person to readers (I hoped, I wasn’t sure when I did it the first time.)
Trait (1 of 2)
I like the idea of characters becoming like a family. They form strong bonds with each other, just like a real family would. I’ll speak to this more in the next email.
(I’ve done a few of these character emails on Bethany Anne - so be expecting them to hit you hard and fast. Lots of energy after July 4th!)
Trait (2 of 2)
Justice was my second choice. When I was working on Bethany Anne (2015) I was feeling a huge sense of injustice in the world, and it was my way to deal with those issues. It is a trait that I saw I resonated with in the stories I was reading.
Why Female?
When I was creating Bethany Anne, I wasn't ready to write a male lead character. To be honest, I hadn’t seen a male character that I resonated with as I personally am a more empathetic person. So, I decided to make a strong, interesting female character who had the things I liked and the quirks that made her feel real. Of course, I’ve created male characters and frankly, after so many stories, have no issues doing it again. But, at that time in my life there were no characters I admired in the stories I was reading that screamed ‘THIS!’ is the type of male I want to write.
It’s a stew…
Once I've got these traits down, I start thinking about their past, what they want, and what drives them. I might try to figure out how they'd react in different situations. This helps me turn these characters from just ideas into the real, complex people you meet in my stories.
Like Bethany Anne’s love of shoes. Totally stole that from my wife.Creating Characters: Playing with Traits I Dig
One of the best parts of being a writer is getting to create characters. You know, those folks you cheer for, sometimes get mad at, or even love to hate. And I've got a pretty straightforward way of doing it: I pick out traits I like and then build on them. Let me break it down for you.
Bethany Anne and the Epic Coke vs. Pepsi Showdown
Now, let's get into a specific example of how I use this character-building method in my stories. Bethany Anne, one of my favorite characters, is a die-hard Coca-Cola fan. And I'll admit, I'm a Coke guy myself. But why did I decide to make her such a big fan of this particular drink? Well, besides my own taste, I thought it would be a fun and relatable quirk for the character. Most folks have a favorite when it comes to Coke vs. Pepsi, and by giving Bethany Anne a clear favorite, I hoped to create an instant connection between her and readers who share her taste.
Plus, this small detail also gives a peek into Bethany Anne's personality, showing her strong beliefs and unwavering loyalty, even when it comes to something as simple as her choice of soda
It worked so well some of you sent me the following image (those who love Pepsi):
You know you did something right when fans send you this stuff!
Does this method always work? Well, as I mentioned earlier, I haven't tried it with a character who loves liver and onions, so there might be some limits. But overall, I find that focusing on a few key traits that I really like helps me create characters that readers can really connect with, and that's what storytelling is all about.
