Genesis[]

Nanocytes are a technology a dissident group of Kurtherians found in their journey to advance the evolution of the "Shepherded" specifies so those species could help in the war between the various Kurtherian clans. This happened about 4,500 years before the time when Bethany Anne was about to leave Earth. [1]

The nanocytes draw on Etheric energy to support physical changes in the "client" species. The nanocytes can be transferred by blood from one individual to another or infused into a person by a Pod-doc. When a Vampire or Were turn is made by blood it takes about 3 days to determine if the person is going to survive the transition. The Pod-doc can also be used to modify/correct nanocytes, necessary as individuals age and the nanocytes begin to mutate into less effective versions of themselves.

Nanocytes translate all languages into a single standard and shares that into the individual’s preferred language as well as takes the individual’s language and turns it into the one standard for dissemination to others.[2]

In general the nanocytes provide:

  • Increased strength
  • Rapid healing
  • Increased life expectancy
  • Instant language translation

The various Kurtherians developed different nanocytes

The Vampire nanocytes are toxic to Weres, documented in several books. The most extreme case is in Akio Revelations where Yuko creates a projectile weapon to fire Vampire blood bullets. Some of the Sacred Clan Weres hit with the projectile literally exploded. The challenge with this weapon is making sure one of Federation Weres don't get accidently hit with friendly fire. Yuko has a nanocyte fix for the friendly fire issue but requires a trip to the Pod - doc.

Nanocytes can be modified by burst radio transmission containing the override in the new programming if the programming is designed for this method of update. The coder can even set up the nanocytes so some parts and be reprogrammed without the Pod-Doc and other parts require the Pod-Doc.[3]

In Gateway to the Universe, Terry Henry Walton finds the Pod-doc is enhancing even FDG members who were thought to be non-enhanced into the Pricolici form of Wechselbalg. It turns out when Cory has healed people she has infused them with nanocytes. In the other direction, when Cory healed Akio his enhanced merged with hers.[4]

In Rebirth, Molly's team has no medic and Sean explains they need to rely on tools in The Empress. There are nanocyte packs and medical docs that do everything the pod docs do without the special Kurtherian nanocyte technology. So they can heal, but they can’t enhance. They still use nanites and are designed to heal any type of tissue, in any species for which we have mapped the genome.[5]

In The Boris Chronicles and some of the other books the nanocytes are called nanites.

Activities[]

Michael had been modified on Earth by a Kurtherian now known as TOM/Thales of Miletus sometime during the dark ages. TOM had by happenstance piloted his ship to Earth well over a thousand years ago and had crash-landed in a hidden valley. Michael had stumbled across the spaceship and TOM had tried to enhance him with nanocytes, but he had not known enough about human physiology to affect a completely successful change. By the time Michael had left the ship, the nanocytes had taken control and he needed human blood to continue living. What no one except TOM had known at the time was that what he was drawing from blood was Etheric energy [6]

TOM realized the flaw put into Michael but was not able to correct the need to consume blood until Michael brought Bethany Anne to be turned. After success with Bethany Anne, Michael and any Vampires who aligned with her (e.g. Akio) had their nanocytes corrected so they no longer needed blood.

Various story lines have individuals with nanocytes who have children and the nanocytes are embedded in the children, not always with expected results.

  • Cordelia Dawn Walton is the child of Terry Henry Walton, and enhanced human and Charumati a Werewolf. She inherits much of her father's strength but only her ears appear to be wolf's. However, she can infuse her nanocytes into other individuals to heal them. [7]
  • Tasha and Dieter are the twin children of Horst and Koda. Koda was severely injured and put in the Pod - doc while she we pregnant with the twins. The twins nanocytes were enhanced and they began to shift to Werewolves when they were just toddlers.
  • Alexis and Gabriel are the twins from Michael and Bethany Anne. They developed in their powers too quickly for their minds to adapt. They were put in a statis/virtual environment that allowed them to synchronize their powers, age and personalities. As they mature they are more powerful than Michael or Bethany Anne.

Before Bethany Anne left the Earth to fight the Kurtherians she seeded the Earth with nanocytes in the hope of having all humans develop special abilities. Unfortunately a scientist named Arthur Drake found the nanocytes and experimented with them. In a spiteful, jealous attack on another scientist he unleashed what would become the Madness. [8] The nanocytes slowly spread across the world destroying much of the progress made since WWDE.

  • Humans became zombies who could infect other people with the slightest scratch.
  • Weres stopped being able to transition and had to choose between being human or were.
  • Vampires were infected by drinking the blood of infected individuals and become insane berserkers.

The scourge was finally cured by the end of the Birth of Magic series where Esme uses the BYPS to aerially spray the correcting nanocytes around the world. While the impact is not immediate, the cure slowly spreads across the Earth wiping out the Madness in about 6 months. [9]

In Price of Freedom the people who were the earliest nanocyte receivers are falling ill to a virus that neutralizes their nanocytes and puts the person in a coma. After analysis by Ted and Plato they believe the virus is designed to attack enhanced humans and probably would impact everyone except Char and Cordy because of their unique nanocytes. Ted develops a Pod-Doc routine that can kill off the virus within minutes in the Pod-doc.

In the Judge, Jury and Executioner series the Magistrate team make extensive use of the Pod - doc to improve their physical capabilities and repair wounds.

In Lone Wolf Squadron Star Corp,, corrupt businessman Barkley Bartlett has a researcher at his hidden Blaze facility develop has project Tainted. The resulting compound is injected into Charli causing his nanocytes to fail, taking her out of action. The marshals try to reach out to the Bad Company (not named but inferred) for access to a Pod-doc to save Charli. Ultimately they battle their way into the Blaze and get Charli into the limited function Pod-doc the researcher had cobbled together and cured her.

In JJE Messiah, Rivka's comes up against an enemy who has developed anti-nanocyte nanocytes. These prevent one of the enemies from being cured in the Pod-doc and when Cole is shot with them he almost dies.
